Drug & Alcohol Testing Solutions for Employers
Why should you worry about drugs and alcohol in your workplace?
According to a recent SAMHSA survey, 1 in 10 (22.4 million) Americans over the age of 18 will use illicit drugs, and 1 in 4 (58.5 million) will engage in binge drinking every month. While drug and alcohol use statistics may be alarming, most employers either don't know about them or fail to see how it affects them when they don't notice an obvious problem. Many employers simply perform drug testing as part of the hiring process and then never think about it again, others don't perform drug testing at all.
If your company falls into one of these categories, we understand. We know that drug and alcohol testing isn't an aspect of human resources that many people want to address. After all, asking people to perform drug and alcohol testing, even if for hiring purposes, can appear to be accusatory. With random or periodic testing comes the same anxiety, but there is also the added chance that an employer has to confront someone with a positive test result. No one wants to think that the person they hired and personally vetted uses drugs or alcohol, but it happens all the time. In addition to the anxiety it can cause, from a profit point of view, it would seem that drug and alcohol testing is an expense with very little or no obvious return on investment. Why spend money when you could forgo testing, and immediately put someone to work to help your company make money and grow.
Why should you care?
The reality is much more complicated. The 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that nearly 69% of the 22.4 million users of illicit drugs are employed full or part time. The same survey found that approximately 80% of of adult binge drinkers (41.2 million) and around 76% of adult heavy drinkers (12.4 million) are also employed full or part time.
With so many illicit drug users and alcohol abusers being employed, the odds are high that even a small, locally owned business will, at some point, encounter employees who are using illicit drugs and abusing alcohol. Contrary to common beliefs, the health, well-being, safety and productivity of the employees who are using illicit drugs and abusing alcohol are not the only effects. Studies have shown that drug and alcohol use on the job can increase accidents and injuries. In many cases these accidents and injuries not only affect the employee involved, but use up valuable company resources and time for cleanup, investigation, repairs and in some cases legal action against the company can cost thousands of dollars. Similar studies have shown that not only does productivity go down with drug and alcohol use, but it can also affect those who work with the users, even if those co-workers are not users themselves.
Stealing and damage to company property are just some of the costs associated with drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace. Not to mention injuries to employees, coworkers and the general public.
How we can help.
We can offer your company drug and alcohol testing services that meet the needs of your specific company and industry. These services can include a random testing component, or you can choose to utilize only the testing services without the random testing component. Since 1989, we have helped employers all over the nation assess their workplace, develop and implement customized and comprehensive drug and alcohol testing policies, evaluate the effectiveness of those policies and provide support to keep those companies drug and alcohol free.
Are all testing services available to employers?
Yes. While most employers will normally elect to utilize standard employer testing services, additional testing services are available to employers if desired.
Can regulated employers have a testing program service account without a random component?
No. While your regulatory agency may permit you to perform random selections "in-house," we are not able to provide an effective service to those employers that elect to do so. Regulations are complex and to best serve our clients we need to be able to see the "whole picture," which would include the random selection component.
Are results certified?
Our laboratories are all certified by SAMHSA and are CLIA compliant. These certifications and regulations help to insure that all results are accurate. Any testing performed without using a laboratory are CLIA Waived.
Do we have to have an account to use your testing services?
No. An account is not required to utilize our testing services but is highly recommended. Not only do you receive a discount for testing services, we are able to provide additional assistance after the testing is complete. Opening an account is fast and free.
An account is required if you plan on utilizing any testing program services.
What is the difference between a testing service and a testing program?
Testing services are only one component of a testing program. Testing programs include access to a complete suite of services to make your testing program as effective as possible. Some of these services are random testing, policy review and policy writing to name a few. Testing programs encompass everything that is required to help make your workplace a safe, productive, drug and alcohol free workplace. Because every employer is different, each testing program can include different components, but all of them include testing services.
Can we use your random selection services but not your testing services?
Testing services are a basic component of our testing programs. Because they are a basic component, they cannot be separated. In order for us to run an effective testing program, we require that all accounts that utilize our testing programs, regardless of if the program contains a random component or not, also use our testing services.
Do you offer testing programs without a random component?
Yes. While a random testing program, when implemented correctly, is integral to a drug and alcohol free workplace, we understand that it may not be practical for all companies to do so. If you are an unregulated or private employer and do not wish to implement a random testing component with your testing program, we can still offer you a full suite of testing services without a random component.
Can you add a random component to a testing program at a later date?
Yes. Random testing programs, when implemented correctly, are integral to a drug and alcohol free workplace. Adding and removing the random component from your unregulated or private employer testing program is extremely simple and can be done at any time.
